Lego Mindstorms Information (this is the same as the paper application I passed out)
What is Lego Mindstorm? Lego Mindstorm uses programming and legos to build machines that can then be controlled with the Mindstorm NXT Control Module. The module uses sensors and motors to move the machine. The focus of Mindstorm is on the programming of the robot.
How does it work? Students use computer laptops to build programs that access the sensor data and then activate motors accordingly. Students must program what the motors do and when.
What do I need to be successful? You need to be a team player since you will be working in small groups. You need to like to problem solve where there may not be one simple answer. You need to want to explore programming (for a taste of this, go to my website and find the button that says “hour of code” and explore some of those activities) You also need to be available Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Ok, I’m on board, what do I do? If you would like to participate, you will need to fill out the application found at http://bit.ly/LegoSignUpor my webpage at mrenglish308.wikisapces.com. If you don’t have internet access, you can also fill out the paper version on the back of this note and return it to your teacher.
Ok, I filled out the application, does this mean I’m automatically on a team? Well, no. We have enough kits for 4 teams of 2. Teams will be on a first come first served basis. The plan is to run each session for a certain number of weeks and then will continue down the list.
